Paul Zukofsky

Paul Zukofsky (1943–2017) was an American violinist and conductor celebrated for his fearless dedication to contemporary classical music. A child prodigy, he made his Carnegie Hall debut at age 12 and became a magnetic interpreter of avant-garde works, collaborating closely with giants like John Cage, Milton Babbitt, and George Crumb (whose electrifying *Black Angels* he championed). His discography—spanning from Bach’s crystalline partitas to razor-sharp modernism—reflects his dual love for tradition and innovation. The releases listed here, including fiery takes on Busoni’s concerto and Cage’s experimental soundscapes, showcase his technical precision and intellectual curiosity. Beyond performing, Zukofsky taught at Juilliard, edited scholarly editions of classical works, and carried the legacy of his poet father Louis Zukofsky through his own boundary-pushing artistry. Whether navigating Paganini’s fireworks or Jo Kondo’s delicate textures, he played with a mix of rigor and spontaneity that kept listeners leaning in.
