Cesare Sterbini was an Italian writer and librettist, born in Rome in 1784 and passing away on January 19, 1831. He is best known for his work with the renowned composer Gioachino Rossini, particularly for writing the libretti for two of Rossini's operas: *Torvaldo e Dorliska* (1815) and *The Barber of Seville* (1816). Sterbini was a versatile individual with a deep understanding of classical and contemporary culture, philosophy, and linguistics, being fluent in several languages including Greek, Latin, Italian, French, and German. He also worked as an official in the Pontifical Administration and occasionally set poetry to music as an amateur.
Sterbini's contribution to opera is significant, especially with *The Barber of Seville*, which is considered one of Rossini's most celebrated works. His libretto for this opera is praised for its witty and well-structured narrative, drawing inspiration from Beaumarchais' original French play.
