Third Ear Band, frequently associated with the experimental and progressive rock scenes of the late 1960s and early 1970s, were an English avant-garde outfit known for their blending of Eastern and Western musical influences. With their formation in 1967, originally under the name "The Giants of Jazz", the band quickly evolved, embracing a more exploratory and instrumental approach to composition. Their music, often instrumental and steeped in medieval, renaissance, and classical influences, shunned the conventional rock instrumentation in favor of a more eclectic sound that included violins, oboes, and hand drums, among others.
The band gained critical acclaim with their early albums such as "Alchemy" and "Elements", and notably contributed to the soundtrack of Roman Polanski’s 1971 film "Macbeth", which brought their music to a wider audience. Despite several lineup changes and periods of relative inactivity, Third Ear Band continued to perform and record music into the 1980s and 1990s, showcasing their longevity and commitment to innovation. Although never achieving mainstream success, their work has remained influential and respected within the circles of experimental music. Their later releases, including live recordings like "Spirits: Live At Circolo Tuxedo, Italy, 1989", and the remastered editions of "Music From Macbeth" and "Elements" serve to both cherish their unique legacy and introduce their sound to new generations of listeners.
