Mayer Hawthorne

Mayer Hawthorne, born Andrew Mayer Cohen on February 2, 1979, is an American singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist known for his contributions to the revival of soul and R&B music in the contemporary era. A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Hawthorne moved to Los Angeles and initially worked as a DJ and producer under the name Haircut, but he rose to prominence with his retro-soul singer persona, Mayer Hawthorne.

Mayer's music is characterized by his smooth vocal style and his incorporation of classic soul and R&B influences with a modern twist. His debut album, "A Strange Arrangement" (2009), was a testament to his ability to blend nostalgic grooves with a contemporary sound, earning critical acclaim and a following among soul enthusiasts. Hawthorne has continued to explore and evolve his sound through subsequent releases like "How Do You Do" (2011) and "Where Does This Door Go" (2013), showcasing his knack for catchy hooks and heartfelt storytelling. With tracks like "The Walk" and "Her Favorite Song," he has managed to capture the essence of vintage soul while appealing to a wide audience. Exploring various musical flavors, Hawthorne has also been involved in side projects such as the funk band Tuxedo with producer Jake One. A true artist of the neo-soul movement, Mayer Hawthorne's work persistently bridges the gap between past and present, illustrated by recent releases such as "Rare Changes" and the playful "Henny & Gingerale," securing his place in contemporary music as both a preserver and innovator of the soulful sound.
