Sun City Girls

Sun City Girls were a highly idiosyncratic American experimental rock band, formed in 1981 in Phoenix, Arizona. The core members consisted of brothers Alan and Richard Bishop, along with drummer Charles Gocher. Their sound was a wildly eclectic mix, drawing from free jazz, psychedelia, Middle Eastern music, punk, folk, and beyond. This refusal to be pigeonholed into one genre is what stamped Sun City Girls as true avant-garde artists. They were as much famed for their shamanistic live performances - which could include anything from surreal theatrics to confrontational improvisations - as they were for their prolific recording output.

Over the years, Sun City Girls released dozens of albums, cassettes, and singles, often on their own label, Abduction. Richard Bishop's guitar work layered with Alan's bass and Gocher's diverse percussion styles created a vast aural canvas that saw few contemporaries match their level of far-reaching exploration. Noteworthy releases like "Torch of the Mystics" and "330,003 Crossdressers from Beyond the Rig Veda" showcase their ability to fuse dissonant elements into strangely coherent wholes, while their "Carnival Folklore Resurrection" series demonstrates their vast, genre-spanning capabilities. Although the passing of Charles Gocher in 2007 marked the end of Sun City Girls as a functioning band, the Bishop brothers continued to honor the group's spirit through individual projects and careful stewardship of the band's extensive back catalogue, ensuring the Sun City Girls' legacy endures in the pantheon of experimental music.
