Jana Winderen is an internationally recognized sound artist and field recorder from Norway, whose work delves into the often inaccessible auditory worlds of environments as diverse as the ocean depths and ice crevasses. She holds a degree in Fine Art from Goldsmiths, University of London, and her approach to sound challenges and expands our perception of the ecosystems that exist beneath the surface of what we can easily see or hear.
With an impressive array of releases, Winderen focuses on revealing the complexity and strangeness of the unseen world. In "Out of Range" (2018), she explores ultrasonic sounds, well beyond human hearing, to investigate audio realms we seldom appreciate. "Energy Field" (2010) takes listeners on an immersive journey into the Barents Sea, capturing the shifting of ice floes and marine life. Her fascination with marine creatures is further explored in "The Noisiest Guys on the Planet" (2012), drawing attention to the cacophonous sounds of shrimp. "Submerged" (2016) offers an acoustic insight into the world beneath the water's surface, while "Heated: Live In Japan" (2009) provides a live recording that brings to light the audible shifts in aquatic environments. Winderen's dedication to uncovering the unseen resonances of natural habitats not only entertains but also raises awareness about the ecological conditions and the urgent need for environmental preservation.
