Justin Hurwitz is an American composer and longtime collaborator of filmmaker Damien Chazelle. He's best known for scoring several of Chazelle's films, including the critically acclaimed La La Land, for which he won two Academy Awards—for Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("City of Stars"). Hurwitz's lush, jazz-infused compositions played a huge role in defining the film’s nostalgic yet modern feel, especially with standout pieces like "Mia & Sebastian’s Theme."
Before La La Land, Hurwitz composed the score for Chazelle’s breakout film Whiplash, and later followed up with the sweeping and experimental score for First Man. A classically trained musician with a flair for thematic storytelling, Hurwitz has quickly established himself as one of the most distinctive film composers of his generation. His ability to blend emotion, melody, and innovation helps bring cinematic stories vividly to life.
