Michel Schwalbé was a Polish-born violinist best known as the longtime concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic under conductor Herbert von Karajan. Born in Warsaw in 1919, he studied under legendary violin pedagogue Carl Flesch and became renowned for his sweet, focused tone and leadership of the orchestra's first violin section from 1957 to 1986. The recordings listed showcase his work as both soloist and leader – from his iconic violin solos in Strauss's *Ein Heldenleben* to leading the orchestra's string section in Brahms, Bach, and Mahler. Though less famous as a soloist than some peers, his collaborative musicianship left an indelible mark on countless classic recordings during the orchestra's golden era. Schwalbé passed away in 2012, leaving behind a legacy as one of classical music's most respected orchestral violinists.
