Milton Batiste

**Milton Batiste** was a beloved New Orleans jazz trumpeter and a pillar of the city’s brass band tradition. Known affectionately as “The Gentle Giant” for his warm presence and towering talent, Batiste was a longtime member of the iconic Olympia Brass Band, where his soulful playing helped define the sound of second-line parades and Mardi Gras celebrations for decades. A master of traditional jazz and Dixieland styles, he collaborated with legends like Fats Domino and Preservation Hall Jazz Band while nurturing younger generations of musicians. His later work, including lively collaborations with Peter Nissens’ European-based New Orleans Jazzband, kept the Spirit of New Orleans alive worldwide until his passing in 2001. Batiste’s legacy remains a joyful soundtrack to the city he loved.
