Sadao China

Sadao China is a renowned figure in modern Okinawan music, known for his talents as a sanshin player, singer, and producer. Born in 1945 in Amagasaki near Osaka, he is the son of Teihan China, a traditional musician. While not born in Okinawa, Sadao China has made significant contributions to the island's music scene. He began singing at a young age and made his debut as a singer at 12. Interestingly, he initially disliked Ryukyu music but eventually became deeply involved in it. In 1990, he formed the Okinawan folk music group Nenes, an all-female quartet aimed at promoting shima uta (island songs).

Sadao China is celebrated for his work in preserving and promoting Okinawan folk music. His contributions include a six-CD collection titled "Shimauta hyakkei—One hundred famous views of island songs" released in 2009. This collection is an important part of Okinawan music heritage. Despite facing vocal issues that led to a brief retirement, Sadao China has continued to perform and contribute to the Okinawan music scene. His legacy is marked by his dedication to ensuring the continuation of traditional Okinawan music while innovating and adapting it for new audiences.
