Docteur Nico

Docteur Nico, born Nico Kasanda, was a legendary Congolese guitarist and a pioneering figure in the development of modern African music. Widely considered one of the greatest guitarists to ever come out of Africa, he was a founding member of the iconic group African Jazz alongside Joseph "Le Grand Kallé" Kabasele. Known for his virtuosic fingerpicking style and smooth, lyrical solos, Docteur Nico helped shape the sound of Congolese rumba—a genre that laid the groundwork for many modern African music styles, including soukous.

Active from the 1950s through the 1970s, Docteur Nico was instrumental in popularizing electric guitar in African popular music, earning him the nickname “Dr. of the Guitar.” His melodic sensibility and technical skill made him a beloved figure across the continent. Works like "Ata Osali Te" and "Libala Ya Motungisi" are just a few examples of his vast, influential discography. His legacy continues to inspire generations of musicians around the world.
