Das Racist was an alternative hip-hop group based in Brooklyn, New York, renowned for their use of humor, academic references, foreign allusions, and unconventional style. Formed in 2008, the group consisted of Himanshu Suri (Heems), Victor Vazquez (Kool A.D.), and Ashok Kondabolu (Dapwell) as the hype man. Their music was a blend of eclectic influences, ranging from rap to punk to electronic music, reflecting their diverse backgrounds and irreverent approach to the genre.
Das Racist first gained attention with their single "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" in 2008, but it was their two mixtapes, "Shut Up, Dude" and "Sit Down, Man", released in 2010, that propelled them to wider acclaim. These mixtapes, which were available for free online, were praised for their lyricism and social commentary, encapsulated in a distinctly playful and referential style. In 2011, they released their first and only commercial album, "Relax," to critical acclaim, further cementing their unique place in the rap landscape. Despite their brief run, Das Racist left a lasting impact on the alternative hip-hop scene before their eventual disbandment in 2012.
