Thomas von Wachenfeldt

Thomas von Wachenfeldt is a versatile Swedish musician, composer, and researcher whose career spans over 30 years, bridging genres from traditional Swedish folk music to death and black metal. Classically trained as a violinist, he is highly regarded for his deep knowledge and emotive performances of Swedish folk fiddle music, particularly from regions like Medelpad and Hälsingland. His notable solo album, *Malleus Clericum – Hinslåtar, näckvalser och häxdanser*, showcases his ability to bring challenging folk tunes to life with remarkable ease. Thomas has also created the ambitious two-volume series *Mythos of the Forefathers*, inspired by Swedish mythology, blending ambient and dark folk elements, and has been active in metal projects like Wachenfeldt and Wombbath, showing his broad musical range.

Beyond performing, Thomas von Wachenfeldt is an academic with a PhD in Music Education, focusing on learning that happens outside formal institutions. He is an Associate Professor at Dalarna University and Uppsala University, and his research includes Swedish folk traditions and metal music history. One of his major recent projects is *Den Vanfrejdade – Hultkläppens låtar och leverne*, a comprehensive tribute to the legendary 19th-century fiddler Hultkläppen, combining meticulous research with recordings of every known tune attributed to Hultkläppen. This work highlights Thomas's dedication to preserving and revitalizing Swedish folk heritage through both scholarship and artistic expression.
