Ustad Sabri Khan was an esteemed Indian classical musician revered for his mastery of the sarangi, a bowed, short-necked string instrument known for its soulful and expressive qualities. Born into a family of classical musicians on the 21st of May, 1927, in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, Sabri Khan was exposed to music at an early age, receiving tutelage from his grandfather and father, who were both renowned sarangi players. He was a proponent of the Senia gharana, a tradition with deep historical roots in Indian music.
During his illustrious career, Ustad Sabri Khan not only performed across India but also took his music to international stages, winning acclaim for his virtuoso performances that combined technical proficiency with emotive depth. His contributions to Indian classical music were recognized with numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian honours, which he received in 2006. His discography, including works like "Sarangi," "Master of the Indian Sarangi," and "Immortal Series Sarangi Maestro(Ustad Sabri Khan)," serves as a testament to his profound understanding of ragas like Darbari and Multani and his ability to convey complex emotions through his instrument. Ustad Sabri Khan passed away on the 1st of December, 2015, leaving a significant legacy and a rich heritage through his disciples and his son, Kamal Sabri, who is also a renowned sarangi maestro.
