Club Nouveau is an American R&B and pop band formed by producer and songwriter Jay King in 1986, following the breakup of the Timex Social Club. Known for their energetic fusion of soul, funk, and new jack swing, the group shot to fame with their 1987 debut album Life, Love & Pain. That album featured the hit single "Lean on Me," a modern, chart-topping cover of Bill Withers’ classic, which won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song.
Club Nouveau also found success with other singles like "Rumors" and "Why You Treat Me So Bad," the latter of which has been widely sampled in hip-hop tracks over the years. With their socially conscious lyrics and catchy melodies, the band carved out a unique space in the late '80s R&B scene. Though they’ve undergone lineup changes over the years, Club Nouveau has continued to produce music and perform, maintaining a loyal fan base.
