Young Knives, a British indie rock band, hails from Ashby-de-la-Zouch in Leicestershire. Initially formed in 1998 under the name Simple Pastoral Existence, the band, featuring brothers Henry Dartnall (vocals, guitar) and Thomas Dartnall (bass, vocals), alongside Oliver Askew (drums, vocals), eventually adopted the sharper moniker, Young Knives. Known for their sharp wit and angular melodies, the band quickly made a name for themselves with their energetic live shows and offbeat lyricism.
The band garnered critical acclaim with their debut album, "Voices of Animals and Men," in 2006, which led to a Mercury Prize nomination. Through the years, Young Knives have continued to evolve stylistically, exploring a range of themes and sounds. Releases like "Superabundance" and its remastered counterpart, as well as the darker and more experimental edge found in their 2020 album "Barbarians," showcase their willingness to push creative boundaries. Notable tracks such as "Man of the People," "Sheep Tick," and "Red Cherries" reflect the band's incisive approach to social commentary and their distinct, quirky imprint on the indie rock landscape.
