Alexander Volpov is a distinguished Russian cellist known for his rich, expressive playing and deep connection to the Russian classical tradition. Born in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg), he began studying cello at a young age and quickly showed remarkable talent, attending the Sverdlovsk School for Musically Gifted Children before continuing his studies at the Rachmaninov Conservatory in Rostov-on-Don under the guidance of renowned cellist Jacob Slobodkin. After graduating, Volpov taught cello at the conservatory and became a founding member of the Rostov String Quartet, which won the prestigious Borodin All Union Competition.
In 1991, while touring in the UK, Volpov and his quartet colleagues decided to remain in the West, launching a new chapter in his career. Since then, he has been in high demand as a soloist, chamber musician, and guest principal cellist with orchestras across the UK. His performances often highlight the Romantic and contemporary Russian repertoire, and he’s known for his collaborations with other top musicians, bringing warmth and technical brilliance to every concert.
