Ocote Soul Sounds

Ocote Soul Sounds is the collaborative brainchild of two highly innovative musicians, Martín Perna, the founder of the Afrobeat ensemble Antibalas, and Adrian Quesada, former guitarist for the Grammy-award winning group Grupo Fantasma. The duo, with Perna from Brooklyn and Quesada from Austin, bound their creative forces out of a mutual love for the dusty, soulful grooves of the 1970s, drawing deep from roots in Latin, funk, and Afrobeat, thus creating an eclectic sound that epitomizes the richness of African and Latin musical traditions converging with a modern sensibility.

Since their inception, Ocote Soul Sounds has crafted a series of projects that push the envelope in regards to genre and cultural interconnection. Their work, such as "El Niño y el Sol" which serves as the original soundtrack for the eponymous film, exhibits a cinematic flair entwined with their rhythmic signatures. Classic releases like "The Alchemist Manifesto" and "Coconut Rock" showcase their penchant for funky percussion, horn-driven melodies, and ambient soundscapes, sewing together the rural spirit of ocote pine wood found in campfire traditions with soulful grooves. Their latest endeavor, "Blues for Ukraine," signals continued socio-political awareness within their craft, evidencing their ongoing evolution as artists committed not only to musical excellence but also to the commentary on human conditions through their art.
