múm

múm is an avant-garde electronic group from Iceland, known for crafting ethereal soundscapes that blend a variety of unconventional sounds and instruments with soft, whispery vocals. The band was formed in 1997 by original members Gunnar Örn Tynes and Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason, along with twins Kristín Anna and Gyða Valtýsdóttir. Their music often features an eclectic mix of digital processing and traditional acoustic elements—ranging from strings and brass to melodicas and glockenspiels—which come together to create a distinctively whimsical and hauntingly beautiful sonic universe.

Over the years, múm has seen some lineup changes while maintaining its core of inventive experimentation. The band first gained international attention with their 2000 release, "Yesterday Was Dramatic – Today Is OK," which has since become a cult classic in the post-rock and indietronica communities. The 20th Anniversary Edition of this seminal album stands as a testament to its enduring influence. Throughout their career, múm has consistently pushed the boundaries of their sound, from the ambient lullabies of "Finally We Are No One" to the more pop-inflected textures of "Smilewound." Albums like "Early Birds," a collection of early work, showcased their penchant for playful, electronic experimentation, while the "Gleðileg Jól" recording offers a glimpse into their ability to mesh seasonal warmth with their signature style. As they continue to evolve, múm remains a revered name for those who treasure innovation and emotion in electronic music.
