Wake Self

Wake Self, born Andrew Isaac Martinez in 1989 in Roswell, New Mexico, was a prominent hip-hop artist who made a significant impact on the New Mexico hip-hop scene. Known for his thoughtful and socially conscious lyrics, Wake Self drew inspiration from figures like Malala Yousafzai, Gandhi, and Malcolm X, tackling themes such as women's rights and challenging the misogyny prevalent in hip-hop culture. He began writing lyrics at the young age of 12 and gained recognition for his collaborations with local artists like Def-I, DJ Young Native, and Ariano. Over his career, Wake Self released several albums including *The Healing Process* (2013), *Good Things Happen to Those Who Wake* (2014), *Malala* (2016), and *Ready to Live* (2019), with his music resonating both in the U.S. and abroad through tours in Europe and the U.S.

Beyond his music, Wake Self was deeply involved in community activism and youth mentorship, conducting inspirational music workshops throughout the Southwestern United States. His journey from a young emcee in Albuquerque to a respected artist was marked by his dedication to using hip-hop as a tool for positive change and cultural expression. Tragically, Wake Self passed away in 2019 due to a car accident in Santa Fe, New Mexico, cutting short a promising career and vibrant voice in hip-hop. His legacy endures through his powerful lyrics and the impact he had on his community and fans.
