Jeronimo de Carrion

Jerónimo de Carrión (c. 1660–1721) was a Spanish Baroque composer born in Segovia. He began his musical journey as a choirboy at the Segovia Cathedral and later studied composition with notable teachers of his time. Throughout his career, he held the prestigious position of maestro de capilla (music director) in various cathedrals, including Mondoñedo, Ourense, and finally Segovia, where he served from 1692 until his death. Carrión was a prolific composer whose body of work includes masses, psalms, offices for the dead, magnificats, lamentations, motets, and over 500 villancicos, a traditional Spanish Christmas musical form.

His music has seen modern revival through recordings by ensembles such as Capilla Jerónimo de Carrión, founded by Alicia Lázaro, which specialize in early Spanish music repertoire. Albums like *Calendas. El tiempo en las Catedrales* and *Ah de los elementos* feature his compositions and highlight his significant contribution to Spanish Baroque sacred music.
