Ashra is a seminal project helmed by German musician Manuel Göttsching, a pioneering figure in the development of electronic music. Rising from the ashes of the influential krautrock band Ash Ra Tempel, which Göttsching founded in 1970, Ashra marked a shift towards more melodic, rhythmic, and ambient soundscapes compared to the heavy psych and experimental jamming of his earlier work. With the release of "New Age of Earth" in 1976, Ashra delved into the serene and atmospheric sides of electronic music, creating lush and soothing soundscapes that were both ahead of their time and formative for the genre that came to be known as New Age.
Embracing the onset of digital synthesizer technology, Ashra's subsequent releases like "Blackouts" (1977) and "Correlations" (1979) further cemented Göttsching's reputation as an electronic maestro, showcasing a refined blend of ambient textures with sequencer-driven rhythms. The 1980 album "Belle Alliance" continued this evolution, adding more pronounced melodic elements and a tighter structure to the compositions. Ashra, under Göttsching's consistent guidance, has remained an influential force in electronic music, bridging the gap between the exploratory ethos of the 1970s krautrock movement and the emerging electronic sounds that would shape the decades to come.
