The Fugs

The Fugs are a legendary American underground band formed in 1964 in New York City by poets Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg, along with drummer Ken Weaver. Known for blending rock music with dark humor, political satire, and countercultural themes, The Fugs quickly became cult favorites of the 1960s underground scene. Their sound was raw and irreverent, mixing folk-rock with biting social commentary that took aim at everything from war to organized religion and government hypocrisy.

Often considered one of the first punk bands in spirit, The Fugs were a unique fixture in the anti-establishment movement of the 1960s. Despite facing censorship and controversy, their defiant lyrics and fearless performances amassed a loyal following. Over the decades, the band went through various incarnations and reunions, continuing to release music and perform live well into the 2000s. The Fugs’ work remains a time capsule of radical thought and artistic rebellion.
