Icon of Coil is a Norwegian electronic music band, known for its contributions to the futurepop and EBM (electronic body music) genres. Formed in 1997 by vocalist Andy LaPlegua—who would later go on to front the band Combichrist—and keyboardist/programmer Sebastian Komor, Icon of Coil started as a solo project of LaPlegua before evolving into a dynamic duo with the addition of Komor. The partnership hit its stride as they began melding sweeping electronic melodies with driving beats, characterized by LaPlegua's distinctive vocal styling.
The band's discography includes a series of powerful albums and EPs that have resonated through the industrial and synthpop communities. Their debut album, 'Serenity Is The Devil,' released in 2000, set the groundwork for their signature sound, which they expounded upon with the follow-up, 'The Soul Is In The Software' (2002). 'Machines Are Us' (2004) continued to build on their reputation, featuring the kind of catchy synth hooks and emotive lyrics that drew a dedicated fanbase. In the same year, they released 'UploadedAndRemixed,' a collection of remixes that showcased the versatility of their music when filtered through the lens of other artists. Icon of Coil's ability to blend the tight, structured form of electronic beats with a lively sense of melody cements their place as a compelling force in the genre. Even after their hiatus, their music continues to be an influential staple within the club scene and remains a reference point for electronic and industrial acts shaping their sounds today.
