Siti & The Band is a vibrant musical ensemble from Zanzibar, Tanzania, formed in 2016 by musicians who met while studying traditional Taarab at the Dhow Countries Music Academy. They creatively blend ancient Arab, Persian, Indian, and African musical traditions with contemporary styles like Afro Jazz, funk, and reggae. Led by the powerful vocalist and oud player Siti Amina, the band draws inspiration from the legendary Siti binti Saad, often called the Mother of Taarab, who was the first female musician from Zanzibar to release recordings and tour internationally. Their music carries strong feminist messages and a commitment to preserving and celebrating East African cultural heritage.
Their debut album, *Fusing the Roots* (2018), showcases this fusion of traditional and modern sounds and has been well received across East Africa and beyond. Siti & The Band's live performances are known for their unique energy and empowering presence, with lyrics often addressing themes of self-determination and social justice for African women. The ensemble features a rich mix of instruments including the ud, qanun, violin, drums, keyboards, and bass, creating a distinctive and engaging sound that honors their roots while pushing musical boundaries.
