Hugh Mundell (1956–1983) was a Jamaican roots reggae singer best known for the classic album *Africa Must Be Free By 1983*, recorded while he was still a teenager and produced by Augustus Pablo. The record became a landmark of late-’70s conscious reggae, pairing Mundell’s clear, youthful voice and militant lyrics with Pablo’s signature, atmospheric sound.
He continued recording into the early ’80s with releases like *Arise* and other tracks that kept to a spiritual, socially aware roots style. Mundell’s life and career were cut short when he died in 1983, but his music—especially *Africa Must Be Free By 1983*—has remained deeply influential among roots reggae fans and collectors.
