Martin Flämig

Martin Flämig was a renowned German choral conductor and church musician, best known for his long and impactful leadership of the Dresdner Kreuzchor, one of the world's oldest boys' choirs. Born in Dresden in 1913, he took the helm as Kreuzkantor in 1959 and held the position until 1991, guiding the ensemble through decades of acclaimed performances and recordings that highlighted Baroque and Romantic choral works. Under his direction, the choir gained international fame for its precise, emotive interpretations of composers like Bach, Schütz, and Bruckner, often blending sacred music with a sense of joyful tradition.

Beyond his work with the Kreuzchor, Flämig was a dedicated educator and organist, contributing to Dresden's rich musical heritage even amid the challenges of post-war Germany. He passed away in 1998, leaving behind a legacy of recordings—like his takes on Bach's Christmas Oratorio and Schütz's passions—that still inspire classical music fans today. If you're into choral classics, his stuff is a great gateway to that timeless sound!
