Shoghaken Ensemble

Shoghaken Ensemble is a revered folk music group that specializes in traditional Armenian music, using authentic native instruments to bring the rich cultural tapestry of Armenia to a global audience. Founded in 1991 by musicologist and duduk master Gevorg Dabaghyan, the ensemble is named after an ancient village in Armenia, reflecting the members’ commitment to the historical roots and authenticity of the music they perform. The ensemble includes skilled musicians who are adept in a variety of traditional Armenian instruments, such as the duduk, tar, kamancha, and dhol, to name just a few.

The ensemble is celebrated for its meticulously researched repertoire and soulful interpretations of Armenian folk music, drawing from medieval, ashugh (troubadour), and regional traditions. Shoghaken Ensemble's approach to music showcases a rich interplay of haunting melodies, rhythmic complexity, and rustic harmonies, offering listeners a profound connection to Armenian history and culture. Some of their most recent contributions to the preservation and dissemination of Armenian music include albums such as "Music From Armenia," which captures the diverse soundscape of their heritage; "Traditional Dances of Armenia," highlighting the rhythmic heartbeat and vibrant spirit of Armenian dance music; and "Armenia Anthology," a comprehensive collection that serves as both an auditory exhibition and a celebration of the nation's diverse musical expression. With their work, Shoghaken Ensemble continues to enchant audiences around the world, cementing their status as ambassadors of Armenian traditional music.
