Capilla Flamenca

Capilla Flamenca was a renowned early music ensemble that specialized in the polyphonic music of the 15th and 16th centuries. Named after the historical term used for the chapel choirs at the Burgundian court, the group was founded in the late 1980s in Belgium. Capilla Flamenca prided itself in meticulously recreating the sounds and performance practices of the Renaissance and early Baroque periods. Their focus was not only to perform music but also to explore the rich historical contexts from which this music emerged.

Over the years, Capilla Flamenca's repertoire included works by composers such as Josquin des Prez, Heinrich Isaac, and Adrian Willaert, among others. The group's versatility is reflected in their discography which showcases a diverse range of musical projects—from the deep religiosity of "Lambert de Sayve: Sacred Music" to the capricious sounds of "Clemens Non Papa: Priest and Bon Vivant." With "Circa 1500," they explored the sounds at the turn of the 16th century, while their album "Polyphony in a European Perspective" provided a cross-section of polyphonic works throughout Europe. The ensemble was not afraid to venture into unique interpretations of modern works with historical thematic ties, such as their innovative exploration of Karlheinz Stockhausen's "12 x 12 - A Musical Zodiac (Tierkreis - Ars Nova - Ars Subtilior)." Capilla Flamenca's commitment to historically informed performance and scholarly research made them an invaluable asset to the world of classical music and contributed to a deeper appreciation of early music traditions.
