Johnnie Allan is a key figure in the swamp pop genre, a distinctive blend of Cajun, country, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll that emerged in south Louisiana and southeast Texas in the 1950s and '60s. Born in Rayne, Louisiana in 1938, Allan started his music career rooted in Cajun music, but he quickly embraced rock and roll influences, eventually becoming one of the pioneers of swamp pop. He's best known for his energetic version of Chuck Berry's "Promised Land," which became a regional hit and a staple of the genre.

In addition to performing, he also became a high school teacher and author, writing about the history and culture of Cajun and swamp pop music.
