Owen Gray

Owen Gray is a pioneering figure in Jamaican music, widely recognized as one of the island’s first homegrown stars. Starting his career in the late 1950s, he was among the earliest artists to record for legendary producer Clement "Coxsone" Dodd at Studio One. Known for his versatility, Gray effortlessly moved between ska, rocksteady, reggae, and even rhythm and blues, making him a crucial link between Jamaica’s early sound system era and the development of reggae.

With a smooth voice and a knack for heartfelt delivery, Owen Gray scored hits like “Please Let Me Go” and “On the Beach” and maintained a steady presence in the UK reggae scene throughout the 1960s and 70s. He’s collaborated with a host of influential producers and artists over the decades, and his music continues to be celebrated for its deep roots and enduring charm. A true trailblazer, Gray helped lay the foundation for generations of Jamaican artists to come.
