Vjekoslav Šutej was a renowned Croatian conductor who made waves in the classical music world from the 1970s until his death in 2009. Born in Rijeka in 1951, Šutej studied conducting in Zagreb and Rome before kicking off an impressive international career. He led major orchestras and opera houses across Europe and the US, including stints as music director at La Fenice in Venice and the Houston Grand Opera.
Šutej was known for his versatility, conducting both traditional classical repertoire and more contemporary works. He was a regular at the Vienna State Opera and founded the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra in Spain. Šutej also had a knack for bringing classical music to wider audiences, conducting the popular "Christmas in Vienna" concerts in the 1990s that featured crossover performances with pop stars.
