Christos Hatzis

Christos Hatzis is a distinguished contemporary classical composer whose work spans a variety of media and often incorporates multicultural, spiritual, and electronic elements. Born in Volos, Greece, on March 1, 1953, he was profoundly affected by the music of his homeland, as well as the deeply ingrained traditions of Byzantine and Orthodox liturgical music. Hatzis emigrated to the United States to study music at the Eastman School of Music and later moved to Canada, which became his adopted homeland.

His compositional output is marked by a unique blend of stylistic elements, reflecting his engagement with a diverse range of cultural influences and his interest in fostering dialogue through music. This is exemplified in works such as "Constantinople," an ambitious multimedia chamber opera that fuses Eastern and Western musical traditions, and "Going Home Star: Truth and Reconciliation," a ballet score that addresses the painful legacy of Canada's residential schools for Indigenous children. Hatzis serves as a professor of composition at the University of Toronto and continues to be an influential figure in contemporary music, as evidenced by his recent releases like "Christos Hatzis: Lamento & Ecstasy" and "To Dream of Silence," which further explore the depths of human emotion through a visionary musical language.
