Empyrium is a German band formed in 1994 by Markus Stock (also known as Ulf Theodor Schwadorf). Originally rooted in symphonic and doom metal with strong influences of dark folk, the band's early releases like A Wintersunset... and Songs of Moors and Misty Fields blended heavy, atmospheric metal with romantic and naturalistic themes. Over time, Empyrium evolved into a more acoustic neofolk direction, particularly evident on albums like Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays and Weiland, showcasing their signature blend of melancholy melodies and poetic lyricism inspired by nature and German Romanticism.
After a long hiatus, Empyrium returned to the studio with The Turn of the Tides in 2014, followed by releases like the live album Into the Pantheon and their 2021 album Über den Sternen, which marked a return to a fuller, more dynamic sound merging their early metal and later neofolk styles. Known for their elaborate compositions and emotional depth, Empyrium has carved a unique place in the worlds of dark folk and atmospheric metal.
