Craig Handy

Craig Handy is a respected American jazz saxophonist known for his versatility, soulful tone, and dynamic live performances. Emerging on the scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Handy quickly made his name playing with jazz legends like Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, and Betty Carter. He’s also been part of ensembles led by Mingus Dynasty and the Cookers, showcasing his deep understanding of both classic and contemporary jazz traditions.

One of Handy’s standout projects is “Craig Handy & 2nd Line Smith,” where he blends New Orleans-style second-line rhythms with the soulful organ trio sound made famous by Jimmy Smith. Throughout his career, he’s explored a wide range of styles, from straight-ahead jazz to funk-infused grooves, as heard on albums like Funky Side Up and Ain’t It Funky Now. His strong sense of melody and rhythm, along with his collaborative spirit, have made him a mainstay in the jazz world.
