Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam is a distinguished Carnatic vocalist who began her training in classical music at the tender age of five. Growing up in a family with a rich musical heritage, she quickly developed a captivating and melodious voice that is complemented by her strong grasp of rhythm, diction, and emotional expression (bhava). She gave her first concert at just twelve and has since performed widely across India and internationally, including prestigious venues and events in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Beyond performing, Vijayalakshmy is also an educator, having conducted workshops and lecture demonstrations globally, and presented academic papers on aspects of Carnatic music.
In addition to her musical accomplishments, Vijayalakshmy holds advanced degrees in music and economics and has served in significant roles in the music broadcasting industry, including with All India Radio Chennai and Sa Re Ga Ma India Limited. She was awarded the Fulbright Visiting Lecturer Fellowship in 2010, which allowed her to teach Indian music at Duke University and North Carolina State University in the USA. Her contributions to preserving and propagating Carnatic music include the 2007 publication of "Apoorva Kriti Manjari," a collection of rare compositions from the Carnatic Trinity, showcasing her dedication to both performance and scholarship.
