Sumac is an experimental metal band known for their complex and heavy soundscapes that push the boundaries of the genre. Formed in 2014 by guitarist and vocalist Aaron Turner—formerly of the post-metal band Isis—and drummer Nick Yacyshyn from Baptists, Sumac quickly made a name for themselves within the avant-garde metal circle. Bassist Brian Cook, of Russian Circles and These Arms Are Snakes, later rounded out the trio, solidifying the group's powerful dynamic.
The band's approach is characterized by a blend of sludge, progressive, and post-metal elements, coupled with improvisational segments that reflect an intense level of musicianship and a fearless attitude towards songwriting. Over the years, Sumac has been consistent in their output, with a discography that is as challenging as it is rewarding. Releases like "Love In Shadow" and "American Dollar Bill - Keep Facing Sideways, You're Too Hideous To Look At Face On," a collaboration with Japanese artist Keiji Haino, have garnered critical acclaim and expanded their following. Renowned for their explosive live performances, as captured on "St Vitus 09/07/2018" and "Even for Just the Briefest Moment Keep Charging This 'Expiation' Plug in to Making It Slightly Better (Live)," Sumac's ferocity and dedication to their craft shine through, solidifying their place as one of the contemporary masters of experimental metal.
