De Oden van Salomo is a musical project that brings to life the oldest known collection of Christian hymns and prayers, dating back to the early Christian era (circa 80-120 AD). These hymns, originally written in Syriac, a form of Aramaic, were likely composed in the 2nd or 3rd century AD. The project involves translating these ancient texts into modern Dutch and setting them to a diverse range of music styles, including folk, pop, and jazz. The music is characterized by its poignant and expressive portrayal of the love and devotion of early Christians for their Messiah, often using vivid imagery and themes of redemption.
The music of De Oden van Salomo has been developed by a team including composer Sjoerd Visser and lyricists from "Psalmen voor Nu," such as Menno van der Beek, Sergej Visser, and Roeland Smith. Their work has resulted in several albums, blending world music, Celtic folk, ambient, Balkan, improvisation, and pop styles. The project aims to revive the rich spiritual heritage of the Aramaic-speaking early Christians, who sang powerful songs of hope and redemption in times of hardship. Recent releases include "Boven alle onrust uit," "Thuis (Ode 35)," and "Goed terecht," showcasing the project's depth and creativity.
