Mats Rondin

Mats Rondin (1960–2014) was a highly respected Swedish cellist and conductor whose passion for music took him across a wide range of genres—from the classical masterpieces of Bach and Beethoven to innovative contemporary works. He began his musical journey early, making his debut as a cellist at the age of 16 and later studying at both Sweden’s Edsberg Music Institute and Stockholm’s Royal College of Music, before training with legendary figures like William Pleeth and Mstislav Rostropovich in London.

Known for his versatility, Rondin served as principal cellist with major Swedish orchestras and collaborated with ensembles throughout Europe. Beyond his orchestral work, he was a devoted chamber musician and educator, holding a professorship at Lund University’s Malmö Academy of Music until his death in 2014. His dynamic performances and deep musicality earned him both critical acclaim and a legacy as a leading figure in Swedish classical music.
