The Get Up Kids are an American rock band hailing from Kansas City, Missouri. Formed in 1995, the group quickly became a prominent figure within the mid-90s emo scene, though their sound also incorporates elements of pop punk and alternative rock. The founding members—Matt Pryor (vocals/guitar), Jim Suptic (guitar/vocals), Rob Pope (bass), and Ryan Pope (drums)—were later joined by James Dewees (keyboards) to complete the lineup that would go on to record their influential second album, 1999's "Something to Write Home About." The album's melodic hooks and earnest lyricism cemented their reputation and laid much of the groundwork for the next generation of emo and pop-punk bands.
Throughout their career, The Get Up Kids have navigated through the ebbs and flows of the music industry, enduring hiatuses and lineup changes while leaving a lasting impact through their discography. Their earlier works like "Four Minute Mile" and "Something to Write Home About" are considered as genre-defining albums. After a temporary split in 2005, the band reunited in 2008, continued to evolve their sound, and welcomed new fans with subsequent musical ventures. "There Are Rules" (2011) showed a more experimental side of the band, while "Problems" (2019) was a return to their emo roots with a mature perspective. Despite the changing musical landscape, The Get Up Kids remain respected veterans in the alternative music scene with a loyal fanbase and a legacy that endures in their expansive catalog, including their most recent EP "Kicker" (2018), which showcases their enduring energy and knack for catchy, introspective music.
