X is an American punk rock band formed in 1977 in Los Angeles, California. The band's core lineup consists of vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom, and drummer DJ Bonebrake, who have remained together for most of the band's history. Their sound is a pioneering mix of punk with rockabilly, blues, folk, and country elements, which was quite unique at the time of their emergence on the punk rock scene. X quickly established themselves as one of the most influential bands in the Los Angeles punk movement, known for their poetic lyrics and raw, energetic music.
The band's debut album, "Los Angeles," produced by The Doors' keyboard player Ray Manzarek, was released in 1980 and is considered a milestone in punk music. The following albums, "Wild Gift" (1981), "Under the Big Black Sun" (1982), and "More Fun in the New World" (1983), further cemented their reputation for blending no-frills punk with insightful lyrical narratives, often exploring the grittier side of life in LA. Despite mainstream success eluding them, their impact on the genre and subsequent bands is indisputable. After a hiatus and various side projects, they returned with a vengeance in the 21st century, as evidenced by their slew of live albums, including "Live at The Whisky A Go-Go On the Fabulous Sunset Strip", and their first studio album in 27 years, "ALPHABETLAND,” which was released in 2020 to critical acclaim, proving that X has lost none of their edge and continues to resonate with both original fans and new listeners alike.
