Dilated Peoples, a Los Angeles-based hip hop trio, has long been distinguished by their unique blend of underground rap aesthetics and mainstream appeal. The group, formed in 1992, consists of rapper Rakaa Iriscience, rapper and producer Evidence, and DJ Babu, the latter being a member of the influential DJ crew Beat Junkies. Garnering a strong reputation for their solid beats, sharp lyrical prowess, and Babu's agile turntablism, Dilated Peoples hit the ground running by consolidating their position in the hip hop community with their debut album, "The Platform," in 2000.
From there, Dilated Peoples rose to new heights with follow-up albums such as "Expansion Team" (2001), "Neighborhood Watch" (2004), which featured the Kanye West-assisted hit "This Way," and "20/20" (2006), showcasing their evolution while staying true to their roots. Though they took an extended hiatus to pursue solo endeavors, they rejoined forces to much acclaim with the release of "Directors of Photography" in 2014. This album was a robust comeback, highlighting their creative synergy and re-establishing them as consistent purveyors of quality hip hop. The group even released an instrumental version of "Directors of Photography" to showcase their sonic craftsmanship devoid of vocal elements, a nod to their instrumental and production-focused followers. With a career spanning over two decades, Dilated Peoples continues to shine as a beacon of enduring hip-hop artistry, influential to both peers and the new generation of rap artists alike.
