IAM

IAM is a pioneering French hip-hop group formed in Marseille in 1989. Known for their thoughtful lyrics, political themes, and deep connection to ancient Egyptian and African culture, IAM played a major role in shaping the French rap scene. Members Akhenaton, Shurik’n, Khéops, Imhotep, and Kephren combine poetic lyricism with lush, sample-driven production, often tackling issues like social injustice, identity, and life in the banlieues (suburbs). Their 1991 debut album, "De la Planète Mars," and especially the breakthrough 1997 record "L'École du Micro d'Argent" are considered landmarks of French rap.

IAM’s sound blends American hip-hop influences with Mediterranean and North African musical elements, reflecting the multicultural roots of their hometown. Their timeless tracks and consistent artistry have earned them a loyal fan base across generations. More than just rappers, IAM are cultural ambassadors who use music as a vehicle for introspection and societal commentary.
