Mani Krishnaswami

Mani Krishnaswami, born Mani Perundevi on February 3, 1930, was a renowned Carnatic vocalist from Tamil Nadu, India. From a young age, Mani showed a natural talent and passion for music, which led her family to encourage her musical training over her initial wish to study medicine. She studied under several eminent teachers, including the likes of Mysore Vasudevachar, Musiri Subramania Iyer, and Papanasam Sivan, and was deeply influenced by the Musiri tradition. Mani was known for her golden, mellifluous voice capable of sustaining flawless renditions throughout her performances, earning high praise from critics and music lovers alike. She studied at Kalakshetra, a prestigious arts institution, and performed widely, including notable concerts in Germany, the UK, and the USSR. Mani Krishnaswami’s dedication to Carnatic music and her ability to popularize the works of Musiri Subramania Iyer have cemented her legacy in the classical music world. She passed away in 2002 but remains celebrated for her artistic contributions.
