M. L. Vasanthakumari

Madurai Lakshmi Vasanthakumari, popularly known by her initials M. L. Vasanthakumari (MLV), was an eminent Indian classical musician and playback singer for film songs in many Indian languages. Born on July 3, 1928, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, she was a child prodigy who started learning Carnatic music under the tutelage of her mother, who was her first guru. She later became a disciple of G. N. Balasubramaniam, one of the leading exponents of Carnatic Music, which greatly influenced her singing style and cemented her place as one of the foremost Carnatic vocalists.

Recognized for her remarkably emotive voice and technical brilliance, MLV paved her way to legendary status within the South Indian classical tradition. Among her numerous contributions to music, she was known for popularizing new compositions and exploring the intricacies of ragas, thus expanding the Carnatic repertoire. Beyond the classical realm, Vasanthakumari also lent her voice to film music, carrying her nuanced artistry to broader audiences. Her illustrious career includes performances that continued to captivate music lovers, with live concerts such as "Collectors Choice - Live Concert - Vol.1 - Dr. M L Vasanthakumari" and a plethora of albums like "Musical Feast" and "Thyagaraja Krithis" that display her virtuosity. Dr. M L Vasanthakumari was not only a performer but also a respected teacher, nurturing the careers of future Carnatic prodigies through the lineage of "Guru Shishya Parambara." Her passing on October 31, 1990, was a significant loss to the Indian classical music community, but her legacy lives on through her recordings and her contributions to the field.
