The Last Poets

The Last Poets are an influential group that emerged from the late 1960s African American civil rights movement, blending poetry with fervent socio-political messages and a fusion of jazz, funk, and African rhythms. Often cited as one of the earliest precursors to hip-hop, their work has vociferously addressed issues of race, spirituality, and resistance against oppression. The ensemble was founded on May 19, 1968—the birthday of Malcolm X—in Harlem, New York, during a period of revolutionary artistic upheaval.

Over time, The Last Poets have seen various changes in their lineup, but they have consistently been led by poet and musician Abiodun Oyewole, alongside various key figures such as Umar Bin Hassan and Jalal Mansur Nuriddin (who passed away in 2018). Their work has remained fiercely relevant as they continue to critique social injustices and advocate for change. Albums like "Transcending Toxic Times" and "Understand What Black Is," reflect an ongoing commitment to cultural expression and an unwavering pursuit of truth. Their incendiary words continue to resonate, illustrating the power of art as a tool for societal reflection and revolution.
