Juris Teichmanis is a German cellist and viola da gamba player born in 1966 in Freiburg. Coming from a Latvian musical family, he studied with notable teachers including Atis Teichmanis, Christoph Henkel, Martin Ostertag, Heinrich Schiff, and Franco Rossi, and completed his training with Anner Bylsma in Amsterdam. Known for his expressive and nuanced playing, Juris spans from historically informed performances to contemporary music, and has performed extensively across Europe, the Americas, and Asia at prestigious festivals and with renowned ensembles.
He is recognized for his interpretations of Bach’s Cello Suites, which he performs on historic instruments tuned to 400 Hz, including the unusual Violoncello Piccolo with five strings, adding a distinctive color to his recordings. Juris is also a sought-after chamber musician and collaborator with many celebrated artists, while serving as artistic director of the BACH PUR Festival in Freiburg. His discography includes works like "F.X. Mozart: Chamber Music," "Bach Cello Suites," and "Beethoven & Ries: Cello Works," showcasing his versatility and deep musical insight.
