Marc Niemann is a highly versatile and acclaimed German conductor known for blending rarely performed contemporary music with classical-romantic repertoire. Born in Hanover in 1973, he trained as a pianist and conductor in Hannover, Lübeck, and Berlin before establishing a distinguished career, including serving as General Music Director of the Stadttheater and Philharmonic Orchestra of Bremerhaven. Niemann is recognized for his meticulous attention to detail paired with a passionate and dramatic conducting style, and he has championed innovative programming such as including works by female composers in every concert, gaining international attention for this "non-dogmatic female quota" initiative.
His achievements include nominations for "Conductor of the Year" by Opernwelt magazine in 2018 and 2023, with the latter honor tied to his world premiere recording of Emilie Mayer's Sixth Symphony, a release that was also nominated for Symphony Recording of the Year at prestigious awards such as Opus Klassik and the ICM Awards. Niemann's discography is broad, spanning contemporary compositions, film music, and complete cycles such as Beethoven’s symphonies and works by Swiss composer Hans Schaeuble. He has been involved with notable festivals like the Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte di Montepulciano (where he was music director in 2022), Beethovenfest Bonn, and the Jerusalem Lyric Opera. Since 2025, he is also the artistic and managing director of the Sendesaal Bremen, where he aims to develop new cross-disciplinary formats and bring fresh audiences to this famed music venue.
