Hamza El Din

Hamza El Din (1929–2006) was a Nubian composer, oud player, tar player, and vocalist, renowned for his introspective and meditative music that transcended cultural boundaries. Born in Toshka, in southern Egypt, El Din was initially trained in electrical engineering before turning his full attention to music. He honed his skills at the prestigious Cairo Conservatory and later at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. His deep connection to the traditions of his Nubian heritage, a region spanning modern-day southern Egypt and northern Sudan, was a significant source of inspiration throughout his music career.

Over the years, El Din developed a unique sound that blended the rich cultural heritage of Nubia with a wide range of global music influences. His compositions often featured the oud—a pear-shaped stringed instrument commonly used in Middle Eastern music—as well as traditional Nubian beats and rhythms. His notable albums include "Music Of Nubia" and "Eclipse," which reflected his virtuosity and intimate relationship with his instruments. El Din's mastery and diverse body of work earned him international acclaim, and he collaborated with an array of artists, including the Grateful Dead and Joan Baez. His album "Explorer Series: Escalay (The Water Wheel)" is a testament to his innovative approach, fusing Nubian folk melodies with contemporary compositions. Through his unique sound and devoted musicianship, Hamza El Din forged a lasting legacy that continues to influence world music genres today.
