William Mathias

William Mathias was a celebrated Welsh composer known for his vibrant and accessible music, particularly in the realms of choral and orchestral works. Born in 1934, Mathias developed an early passion for music and went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music. His compositions often draw on his Welsh roots and showcase a keen sense of melody and rhythm, with a distinctive style that balances modern flair with lyrical warmth.

He is especially renowned for his anthem "Let the People Praise Thee, O God," which was performed at the 1981 royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. Mathias’s catalog includes symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and a wide range of sacred choral works. Beyond composing, he also made a lasting impact as a teacher and advocate for the arts in Wales, notably founding the North Wales International Music Festival. Mathias passed away in 1992, but his music continues to be performed and celebrated for its spirit and craftsmanship.
